Flying Geese & Holiday Gift Ideas from the Studio

I'm excited to share my latest piece with you: Flying Geese, a work that feels especially urgent and meaningful to complete right now.

Flying Geese — A Symbol for Our Times

The Flying Geese quilt pattern has always fascinated me. Once a secret sign of hope and direction on the Underground Railroad, it has become a symbol of collective movement and shared leadership. These symbols of hope feel all the more relevant today.

Flying Geese, 60 x 72 inches, mixed media

At 60 x 72 inches, this mixed media piece combines painted acrylic on canvas with my signature quilted technique. I've worked to honor the historical weight of this pattern while bringing it into conversation with our present moment. Art carries histories within it—and can shape our futures if we let it.

The pattern speaks to me about migration, about following the right path even when the way is uncertain, and about the power of moving together rather than alone. In creating this piece, I've been thinking about guidance, resilience, and the ways we look to each other and to our shared symbols when we need direction most.

Holiday Gift Ideas: Ode to My Mother Series

As the year draws to close, I wanted to highlight several intimate pieces from my Ode to My Mother series—works that explore the complicated, tender relationships between mothers and daughters. These smaller framed pieces make thoughtful gifts for those navigating their own family stories:

"Ode to My Mother No. 10" (11 x 11 in, framed) — A quiet contemplation on enduring familial bonds

"Ode to My Mother No. 12" (11 x 11 in, framed) — Exploring inherited history and self-determination

"Ode to My Mother No. 13" (11 x 11 in, framed) — A meditation on accepting what we've been given

"Ode to My Mother No. 14" (11 x 11 in, framed) — Navigating the layers between self and family

Each piece is created using my process of deconstructing old paintings and quilting them together—a literal act of taking what came before and stitching it into something new. These works are messy and tender, just like family.

Wishing you hope and direction as we move into the new year.

Warmly,

Lisbet
